Edge Rusher Scouting Reports - 2024
Bird’s Eye View: Positional Analysis
The 2024 NFL Draft does not feature the quality nor the quantity of Edge Rushers like last year's class but there are still a couple of top flight pass rushers available for teams in need. Jared Verse (Florida State), Dallas Turner (Alabama), and Laiatu Latu (UCLA) are all experienced and productive college pass rushers with the skills and abilities to be developed into double digit sack artists in the NFL. There are several intriguing developmental talents with the raw skills needed to pressure the QB, although the results in college were sporadic. Chop Robinson and Adisa Isaac (Penn State), Jonah Elliss (Utah), Ron Stone (Washington State), Austin Booker (Kansas), and Jalyx Hunt (Houston Baptist) all have high upsides to be developed by patient NFL teams.
Positional Grade: C
Jared Verse / Florida State
6037 / 254 / 9.7” Hands / 33.4” Arms / 79.4” Wingspan
4.58 40 / 35” vertical / 10’7” broad jump / 7.31 3-cone drill / 31 reps (225 lbs)
Possesses NFL size and length for a 4-3 DE. Long arms that he uses to create separation from OTs, disrupt passing lanes, and drag the QB down. Nice get off at the snap. Nice bend to cut the corner and the burst to close on the QB. Improved bull rush and converts speed to power very well. Strong and can push the pocket with power and leverage. Holds the edge well and maintains containment in the run game.

Chop Robinson / Penn State
6027 / 254 / 32.4” Arms / 76.2” Wingspan
4.48 40 / 34.5” vertical / 10’8” broad jump
Transfer from Maryland. Undersized 4-3 DE with an extremely quick first step. Plays low and is difficult for OTs to block. Explosive finisher who brings his pads on contact. Displays the ability to bend, flatten, and close with urgency on the QB – too quick for most ORTs to handle (see Michigan game where he flew past ORT Karsen Barnhart). Athletic and fluid enough to drop into zone coverage but is best going forward. Needs to improve hand use to shed blocks better. Tremendous upside.
Dallas Turner / Alabama
6026 / 247 / 34.3” Arms / 83” Wingspan
4.46 40 / 40.5” vertical / 10’7” broad jump
Former 5-star recruit. Possesses an athletic build with extremely long arms and twitched up athleticism often displayed with a quick first step at the snap. Lines up in both two and three-point stances. Excellent quick twitch displayed at the snap. Very impressive closing burst on the QB. Displays loose hips and light feet and bends extremely well. Plays with great leverage which gives him a great ability to convert speed to power. Fast and covers a lot of ground. Not used much in pass coverage due to his elite pass rushing skill.

Transfer from Cornell where he was a safety. Ideal size with an excellent reach. Quick off the snap. Possesses a dynamic closing burst. Has a nice spin move but needs additional moves to shed blocks – lacks much of a pass rush arsenal. Tremendous upside begging development with the raw athleticism needing molding. Tremendous upside for a patient organization.
Laiatu Latu / UCLA
6046 / 259 / 32.5” Arms / 78.2” Wingspan
4.64 40 / 32” vertical / 9’9” broad jump
Tall and long 3-4 edge with a huge wingspan. Tremendous snap anticipation and quick twitch displayed at the snap. Displays the ability to flatten and close on the QB with an impressive finishing burst. Has a second gear when he turns the corner – elite burst. Uses hands well to shed blocks. True technician who probably has the most advanced pass rushing skills in this class. Smart and aware. Holds the edge well in run support. Recorded 10.5 sacks in 2022 and led FBS in TFL for 2023 (21.5).

4.79 40 / 32.5” vertical / 10’0” broad jump
Transfer from Minnesota. Possesses the desired frame with very long arms, although he could use more mass on his frame. Displays effective range crashing down the LOS in backside pursuit. Has a tendency to over pursue and lose containment in run support. Brings pads on tackles and breaks down well in the open field. Converts speed to power surprisingly well considering his lack of mass. Displays a good closing burst on the QB. Started only one game in 2023 but led the Jayhawks in sacks (8).
Bralen Trice / Washington
6034 / 245 / 32.4” Wingspan
4.72 40
Looks the part of an NFL edge rusher – good size and overall length with very long arms. Lines up in a two-point stance. Quick off the snap. Very good burst to close on the QB. Lacks much of an arsenal of pass rushing moves. Tight in the hips and does not bend or flatten as much as desired. Most effective as a pass rusher when he reduces down to DT and rushes from the inside where his speed and athleticism creates mismatches against IOL. Athletic enough to drop into coverage. Sets a strong edge and establishes containment against the run. Crashes down the LOS and cleans up in backside pursuit. Very good run down defender. Steadily improved throughout the season and is playing his best towards the end of the season.

Ideal length with an extremely long wingspan. Uses length well to disrupt throwing lanes. Very effective closing burst. Flashes a nice bull rush. Needs to add some pass moves to his rush plan – stays glued to the OT for too long. Very good in run support where he sets a strong edge and closes down the outside run. High effort player who should excel on special teams.

Excellent size – tall and long, with a huge reach. Has prototypical size for a 5T. Reach (84.4”) is tremendous and allows him to knock down passes at the LOS. Versatile – could play Edge, 3T, or 5T in the NFL – similar player to JJ Watt. Excellent hand use to shed blocks. Displays great first step quickness. Quick and sudden for his size. Can get skinny and slice through holes. Effective hand fighter. Recorded 8.5 sacks and 14 TFL in 2023.

6020 / 247 / 30.4” Arms
4.68 40 / 25 reps (225 lbs)
Transfer from North Texas. Tall and long stand up 3-4 edge with great quickness, bend, and closing burst. Possesses shorter than desired arm length for an edge. Quick twitch at the snap but often caught guessing and gets penalized for jumping offsides. 21 career sacks. Can get washed away at the LOS by power and strength and is a liability against the run. Appears to have the athleticism and agility to play in space as an off the ball LB. May need to convert to OLB on early downs and then rush off the edge on third down.
Jonah Elliss / Utah
6021 / 248 / 33” Arms / 79.2” Wingspan
Son of former Pro Bowl DT Luther Elliss (Lions). Tough hand fighter who battles and competes through the whistle – sheds blocks well. Strong and holds the POA well. Hustles and has a non-stop motor. Very effective bull rush. Improving as a pass rusher – good agility, burst, and an effective spin move. Flattens and closes on the QB with technique and urgency. Does not convert speed to power effectively and relies on speed and effort to get to the QB.

4.85 40 / 30.5” vertical / 9’3” broad jump / 7.43 3-cone drill
Very good combination of size, mass, and a large wingspan. Very good athlete who looks like an ideal 5T or early down run stopping 4-3 DE. Body type fits both even and odd man fronts. Strong and physical. Can reset the LOS with power and his strength is his greatest asset. May never be a great sack artist but he gives a DL a versatile piece to slide up and down the LOS.
Tre'Mon Morris-Brash / UCF
6023 / 256 / 32.3” Arms / 80.4” Wingspan
Good size, mass, and overall length with a large wingspan. Lines up in a two-point stance on the LOS or lined up as an off the ball LB. Good range. Very good open field tackler. Displays quick twitch and often wins at the snap. Fantastic closing burst on the QB in the pocket. Flattens and bends well. Lacks many pass rushing moves and stays glued to the OL too easily at times. Needs continued development in hand fighting techniques. 37” vertical / 9’10” broad jump
Good height, frame, and overall length. Lines up in a three-point stance. Very good athlete with natural twitch at the snap. When he wins it is typically with first step quickness. Knows how to make himself skinny and gets through holes. Agile and quick with a good closing burst. Has improved steadily as a pass rusher and has a good arsenal of pass rush moves. Needs development in stacking and shedding blocks more efficiently.
Ron Stone / Washington State
6025 / 247 / 32.2” Arms / 78.6” Wingspan
Son of former NFL player of the same name. Adequate size and length. Excellent burst and closing speed. Great agility and bend – flattens and closes quickly on the QB. Quick twitch displayed at the snap and often wins with his first step. Effectively uses hands to disengage blocks and strip the ball. Ineffective in holding the edge in the run defense and may be limited to situational pass rusher duties at the NFL level. Better moving forward than backwards – a switch to LB may be problematic.

4.72 40 / 37” vertical / 9’11” broad jump / 23 reps (225 lbs)

Plays with excellent pad level and holds the edge well in run support. Surprisingly strong and reduces down to DT on obvious run downs despite lacking the size or mass for the duties – yet still typically wins. Led FBS in sacks in 2022 (16).

Transfer from Ohio State. Very good length and quickness. Lacks some desired size and mass. Adequate build. Sudden mover going forward. Pushes the edge with speed and burst. Improving hand use is aiding his ability to shed blocks. Covers ground with huge strides in backside pursuit. Can be neutralized when ran at and is best in run support when he can pursue from the backside.
Eric Watts / UCONN
6060 / 274 / 35.7” Arms
4.67 40 / 36.5” vertical / 9’9” broad jump / 7.59 3 cone drill / 21 reps (225 lbs)
Exceptional size and measurements with long arms. Flashes elite quickness and twitch at the snap. Displays a powerful punch. Relies on a powerful bull rush to get pressure on the QB. Possesses ideal size and length for a 4-3 DE and he could project to 5T. Great mass and frame with grapevines for arms – massive wingspan. Hot and cold player that disappears for stretches. Cuts the corner well and has good agility for his size. Strong and holds the edge well in run support but plays too upright and can get washed out of plays.
Zion Tupuola - Fetui / Washington
6030 / 244 / 10.5” Hands / 33.3” Arms
Ideal size with solid mass and extremely long arms. Quick off the snap. Possesses a powerful bull rush. Plays with leverage. Developing hand use to shed blocks and strip the ball (see FF v Caleb Williams of USC). Very aggressive in his pass rush and will sometimes lose containment.
