SNS 2024 NFL Draft - Fifth Round Observations & Notes

After a long drought of 138 picks, Spencer Rattler of South Carolina was selected by the Saints and then 16 picks later, Jordan Travis (Florida State) was picked at #171 by the Jets. Rattler enters an ideal situation in New Orleans. Derek Carr may be entering his last year in Louisiana and Rattler is highly experienced and has matured and grew as a leader while in Columbia. He could be the starting QB for the Saints starting in 2025. Travis, the ACC Player of the Year, was having a Heisman worthy season when he blew out his knee in the penultimate game of the season back in November. Travis goes to an ideal situation as he continues his rehab behind Aaron Rodgers. This will be essentially a redshirt year as he learns under Rodgers in NYC.

The run on RBs continued in the fifth round as five more RBs came off the board.  Audric Estime (Note Dame) was the first RB selected at #147 by Denver. Estime is a pure power back with quick feet and soft hands. He gives the Broncos a dangerous 1-2 combination with Javontae Williams. Baltimore took a flyer on Rasheen Ali (Marshall), who injured his knee last season but looked like a legit NFL RB prior to his injury. Tyrone Tracy (Purdue), a former WR at Iowa, is a great receiver with developing run instincts and gives the Giants a potential third down back. Keilan Robinson (Texas) is the second Longhorns RB drafted (second year in a row that two Longhorns RBs were drafted). He gives the Jags a third down receiving back who is very dangerous in space. Finally, Isaiah Davis (South Dakota State) was selected by the Jets, who never seems to get enough RBs, and gives them a physical runner with a nose for the end zone.

The theme of the fifth round was time to get a CB. Ten CBs were drafted in the fifth round, including the underrated Josh Newton (TCU), the big and physical Cam Hart (Notre Dame), the quick and agile Jarvis Brownlee (Louisville), the quick slot corner, Chau Smith-Wade (Washington State), and CFL Most Outstanding Rookie, Qwan'tez Stiggers. In a draft with a deep and talented group of WRs, teams have to match up. And match up they did in round five.

The NFL Draft may be over but at SNS, we are just getting started! Over the next couple of weeks, SNS will do a deep and thorough review and analysis of the entire NFL Draft, including an assessment of all 32 NFL teams' drafts and UDFA acquisitions, and keep track of the hundreds of prospects who could make NFL rosters as free agents.
